What kind of sticker is the most durable?

There are a lot of different types of durability. Do you need you artwork to withstand harsh, direct sunlight? Even surviving outdoors has a lot of variables; are you trying to survive a winter in Georgia or a winter Buffalo? Are you printing a product label that will come up against daily manhandling? Specificity will help us to pair you up with the best sticker for your durability challenge.

Sticker Stocks | Sticker Inks | Sticker Coating & Lamination

Sticker Stocks

Your first stop on the sticker durability train: The sticker stock that you choose has the largest impact on general durability.

  • Matte Paper (1-2 Years, Indoor) The ideal choice for mailing labels, shipping labels, writing or typing. White With Opaque Adhesive (great for cover-up stickers) is available. Not recommended for outdoor use.
  • Gloss Paper (1-2 Years, Indoor) The same paper as the White Matte, but with a glossy finish. This stock can be written on with Sharpie markers, but not ink pens. The gloss coating may increase your durability a bit in certain situations; but, not significantly. Not recommended for outdoor use.
  • Foil (1-2 Years, Indoor) "Nothing gold can stay..." Foil Stickers are printed on paper and are not laminated. Not recommended for outdoor use or when durability it a concern.
  • Clear Polypropylene (1-2 Years, Indoor) This is a 2 Mil Clear Film Stock. Very similar to vinyl but a bit thinner and without lamination. Not recommended for outdoor use.
  • Vinyl (3-5 Years, Outdoor) This stock has a medium level of durability.
  • Clear Vinyl (3-5 Years, Outdoor) This stock has a medium level of durability.
  • Laminated Vinyl (5+ Years, Outdoor) Our most versatile stock. This is a 4 Mil stock with a 1 Mil Poly Film Lamination for the highest possible gloss and added durability against general scuffing, wear and tear.

Sticker Inks

While your choice of ink type will have the most immediate impact on your sticker's durability, if you're looking to maximize your sticker's longevity than you also want to plan your ink colors. The harsh, UV light from direct sunlight fades different ink colors at different rates. All colors are susceptible to fading, reds and yellows are the most fugitive -- meaning they will fade the quickest. When in doubt, black ink on white vinyl stock is your best choice.

  • Flexographic Inks Water-based inks are the least durable option.
  • CMYK Full Color Inks The solvents used in our full color sticker inks has a medium level of durability. CMYK inks are good for outdoor use; but, scuff more easily than screen-printed inks.
  • Screen Printing Inks Screen printing inks are literally plastic. These have the great durability outdoors, even in hard conditions.

UV Coating & Lamination

UV Coatings are cured with UV light during printing. They don't necessarily offer any extra protection from UV light.

  • Flexographic Stickers Are generally uncoated.
  • CMYK Full Color Stickers UV coating is standard on all full-color stickers. Lamination can be added for maximum durability.
  • Screen Printed Stickers Lamination can be added for maximum durability.
